This €10 Silver Proof Coin has been struck to celebrate the magnificent UNESCO Heritage Site of Skellig Michael, based 15 Kilometres off the west coast of County Kerry. 2005 €10 Silver Proof Coin
In May 2005, the Central Bank & Financial Services Authority of Ireland launched the 2005 €10 silver proof coin for Ireland.
2005 marked the bicentenary of the birth of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, Ireland's greatest scientist, and has been designated by the Irish Government as "Hamilton Year 2005: Celebrating Irish Science".
In celebrating the life and work of Sir William Rowan Hamilton, the design of this coin, by Michael Guilfoyle, pays tribute to Hamilton’s use of algebraic equations that revolutionised mathematical physics. His understanding of symbols and mathematical language is represented by a decorative circular pattern formed from these symbols. At its centre is the Nabla, the symbolic operator introduced by Hamilton to represent any arbitrary function. The symbol is so called because of its visual resemblance to the Egyptian harp of the same name. The diameter of the coin is 38.61 mm and the coins each weigh 28.28 grammes. The alloy used in the production of this coin is .925 Sterling Silver.
