New collector coin celebrates Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift coin launchOn Thursday 30 November 2017 the Central Bank released a striking new collector coin at a special launch event in Dublin.

The €15 silver proof coin celebrates the life of Jonathan Swift – one of Ireland’s most popular authors – and was launched to mark the 350th anniversary of Swift’s birth in 1667.

Educated at Trinity College and later appointed Dean of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Swift is regarded as one of the foremost prose satirists in the English language.

He is best known for his famous writings, including A Tale of a Tub, A Modest Proposal and of course his masterpiece Gulliver’s Travels which recounts the voyages of Lemuel Gulliver to four exotic lands.

The launch of the coin took place at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin where Swift’s remains were interred after his death in 1745.

Pictured at the launch are two pint-sized actors, Josh Hanlon, 3 and his brother Ryan, 5  from Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

They are playing the part of Lilliputians, the tiny inhabitants of Lilliput island, who famously take Lemuel Gulliver prisoner during his voyage.

About the coin

This exquisite new coin was designed by renowned coin and medal designer Sebastian Mikolajczak whose work was selected following an open competition.

His design aptly features the character of Gulliver best known work as a Lilliputian ship sails across the open pages of Gulliver’s Travels.

Each coin comes in its own elegant presentation box along with a Certificate of Authenticity attesting to its issue limit of 2,000 pieces.

The coin has a diameter of 38.61mm, weighs 28.28g and has been struck in .925 sterling silver to proof quality.
