Research Engagement Programme
Our engagement with the domestic and international research community is critical to the:
- Delivery of our research agenda
- Quality of our policy advice
- Research culture of our organisation.
We aim to build strong and productive collaborative relationships with external researchers through a number of distinct programmes.
We are currently inviting applicants for our Research Affiliate and Visiting Scholar programmes, while some of our other programmes are open for applications throughout the year.
The Bank will host an information session, in webinar format, on Wednesday May 1st, 1-2pm. This is open to all researchers and will allow time for Bank staff to explain our programs in more detail, and for Q&A with interested researchers.

Research affiliates collaborate with our people (remotely or physically) on an ongoing basis. They work directly with our people to deliver our research agenda and shape our policy advice and decisions. Research affiliates have staff-like access to our offices, our technology and our data, and can conduct research remotely where suitable. These arrangements are reviewed and extendable annually, and are not remunerated.

We invite external researchers to join us for short stays of one-two weeks. During their time with us, scholars are immersed in our research, presenting their work, attending our seminars, providing feedback on staff research projects, and discussing our research agenda with senior management. Travel expenses and accommodation will be provided for our visiting scholars.

To strengthen the effectiveness of our policies and enhance the quality of our research, we foster partnerships with external advisers. These arrangements can focus on advice within a particular topic area, or on a particular research methodology, or can be of a broader strategic nature around our research agenda. Scientific advisers are not asked to work on a specific topic or paper, but rather to provide advice on an ongoing basis throughout the year. We advertise globally for scientific advisers in specific topic areas when the need arises.

No organisation can be the global expert on all topics. We directly partner with external experts in consultancy-type arrangements to fill gaps in our expertise. These experts co-author specific, targeted research papers in topic areas defined by Central Bank of Ireland. This allows us to make stronger policy contributions and enhance the quality of our work through skills transfer and staff development. The length of the programme is conditional on the project but typically lasts between three and 12 months. Remuneration is provided subject to the likely required time commitment. Similar to our Scientific Advisers, specific calls for applications for specific projects are advertised as the need arises.

We host PhD researchers while they conduct high-quality analysis on policy-relevant topics. This programme involves a stay of between six and 12 months and is aimed at PhD students specialising in economics, finance or a related field.
