Beyond the health emergency, COVID-19 is having severe negative economic effects on many individuals, households and businesses. Unfortunately, for many, these effects will last beyond the short term. Additionally, while the level of distressed debt in Ireland has reduced significantly since the peak in 2013, there were many mortgage borrowers with deep arrears that pre-date the pandemic. The Central Bank remains committed to ensuring that all borrowers are supported, protected and given the opportunity to recover to the greatest extent possible. To this end, we are hosting a roundtable event to discuss this topic with those supporting people and businesses who have experienced debt problems.
